YAWA AQUATIC CENTRE
Mornington Peninsula Shire Council (MPSC), together with the state and federal governments, committed to building a new $37 million facility located in Rosebud. From this Yawa was borne. Yawa means “to swim” in the language of the local Bunurong/Boon Wurrung people. The facility was eagerly anticipated by the community for over 20 years.

PROJECT PARTNER Lighting & Electrical Distributors
LUMINAIRES FEATURED Billund Street & Area Luminaire
Working with lighting partner Lighting & Electrical Distributors alongside BRT Consulting Engineers and Peddle Thorp Melbourne ELS supplied lighting to the indoor pool areas, gymnasium, entry foyer and exterior. We took special consideration with the lighting of the Pool and Gymnasium in particular, ensuring we supply a compliant solution as per the requirements set out in the AS 2560 lighting standards. We achieved this with a combination of indirect illumination and direct illumination from Ligman Australia Billund luminaires.
YAWA’s unique location on the Mornington Peninsula is surrounded by water. Notably, Port Phillip Bay, Bass Strait and Western Port Bay. This aquatic centre was designed to address the highest rates of drowning in Victoria. Lifesaving Victoria recorded 42 deaths and 70 non-fatal drowning incidents in the region over 10 years. It’s a facility which caters to all stages and ages of life – with inclusivity and social engagement at its heart.
Yawa Aquatic Centre is an exemplary facility. Not only does it provide both wet and dry activities through the facility’s state of the art indoor 50m pool, a learn to swim pool, hydrotherapy program and gym. This facility also provides allied health services, in addition to a cafe and communal gathering areas.
