PARRAMATTA LIGHT RAIL STOPS

With Parramatta emerging as Sydney’s second CBD, improved transport links are essential to support jobs, housing, and services for the city’s rapidly growing population. The Parramatta Light Rail is a key infrastructure project designed to ease congestion, reduce travel times, and better connect communities across the region.

Stage 1 connects Westmead to Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD and Camellia, offering direct links to major health, education, and employment precincts—including Westmead Hospital, Western Sydney University, and the future Powerhouse Parramatta. The route also improves access to key residential and commercial hubs such as North Parramatta and Rosehill, making it easier for people to move through the city without relying on cars.

PROJECT PARTNER Jadecross
LUMINAIRES FEATURED Bespoke Totems

The LIGMAN Australia team collaborated closely with local partner Jadecross and the engineers and lighting designers at WSP to deliver this bespoke solution. LIGMAN’s quick turnaround on shop drawing updates was crucial as the final design took shape. Specialty optics were used to meet technical lighting requirements from a lower-than-usual mounting height.

The final result is a testament to the exceptional coordination between designers, partners, and installers—as well as LIGMAN’s commitment to service, quality, and manufacturing excellence.

The new Parramatta Light Rail stops highlight a seamless blend of innovative design and functional architecture, thanks to the collaboration between Cox Architecture , WSP Lighting Designers and project partners. Emphasising modernity and sustainability, Cox’s sleek, geometric structures integrate effortlessly with Parramatta’s urban fabric. Each station is designed for optimal passenger flow and comfort, featuring spacious platforms, intuitive wayfinding, and full accessibility. The design balances practicality with a distinctive aesthetic that reflects the energy of Western Sydney.

As with many infrastructure projects, the station platforms required high levels of both vertical and horizontal illumination. The challenge, however, was that Cox and WSP envisioned a lower height “totem” structure that would integrate signage, ticketing, and lighting. With no existing product on the market to meet this brief, LIGMAN set to work designing a completely custom luminaire.
