MB LYNCH MEMORIAL GARDENS

In 2020, Brimbank City Council upgraded MB Lynch Memorial Gardens, a central feature of Sunshine town centre, preserving its historical significance while enhancing its functionality. The improvements included new pathways, seating, extensive planting, and feature lighting designed to honour the area’s rich history. Lighting designer Simon Gullifer from Rexel Holdings Australia led the lighting project, inspired by Sunshine’s industrial past.

LUMINAIRES FEATURED Vancouver Light Columns

The luminaires, equipped with up/down light sources and a pulsing glow effect, were a truly unique creation. The fixtures were manufactured by LIGMAN in Thailand based on the precise project requirements. Once they arrived in Australia, the controls were installed and tuned to the designer’s design in the LIGMAN Australia factory. Installed by Ampstar Electrical, the final lighting effect seamlessly blends the gardens' historical essence with modern design, creating a striking and meaningful tribute to Sunshine’s heritage.
This project highlights how well-designed lighting can transform outdoor spaces, fostering greater pedestrian engagement and enhancing perceived safety through activating the area at night. Brimbank mayor Ranka Rasic said “the project has delivered a welcoming, safe and vibrant garden and public space for the community.”

Sunshine’s history, tied to the establishment of the Sunshine Harvester Works in 1906, influenced the design. Gullifer envisioned custom 3-metre 2700K lighting columns resembling forged iron, with glowing effects to evoke the look of molten metal. As no such luminaire existed, the team customised LIGMAN Vancouver architectural columns, incorporating screen-printed panels by CALGRAPHICS to achieve the desired forged iron appearance.
